Being focused sounds simple. It’s a skill of concentrating on whatever you’re working on without being distracted by other things.

But it’s surprisingly hard to maintain consistent focus while working.

It’s particularly difficult when working in front of a computer.

Computers provide access to all of the information in the world.

But they also tempt you with every new site, social network, and viral video there is.

Unfocused behavior is any kind of activity that is off-task from what you intend or need to be working on.

This includes checking Facebook or your email repeatedly, but also includes alternating between four different tasks when you need to devote all your attention to one.

Digital tools can both help and hurt your focus while working.

Constant email notifications and Twitter updates can serve to distract you from what you need to work on.

However, other apps can keep you focused on your work.

Some help by preventing you from accessing non-work related sites.

While others provide a work experience that eliminates visual or audio distractions keeping you engaged.

It’s essential that you are aware of the positive and negative ways digital tools can impact your focus while at work.

Being consistently focused on the task at hand ensures that you’re devoting your full attention and doing the best work you can.
